Ætheric Rose Window

I'm an artist and designer in Los Angeles. My other work may be found at the link below. ■ Ætheric Rose Windows are a peak into the medieval mind. Here the earth is the stationary center of the universe, and multiple concentric spherical heavens move around it. From a geocentric perspective, we look up and we see the "wandering stars," what we now call planets, gradually inscribe delicate floral tracery against the background of the fixed stars, like gothic rose windows in the heavens. Beyond the sphere of the fixed stars lies the Primum Mobile, the "first moved," which imparts its motion to the rest of the spheres, and which Aristotle believed was moved solely out of love for God. ■ The four states of matter known to science (solid, liquid, gas, plasma) are replaced by the four classical elements inherited from the ancient Greeks: earth, water, wind, fire. ■ But there is also a fifth element, first attested to by Plato: the æther, which undergirds the other four and is the ephemeral yet crystalline substance from which the celestial spheres are formed, with the planets inlaid into them like jewels. ■ Ætheric Rose Windows are an homage to the floral glory of the ancient cosmos, and an homage to the uncreated Glory of its Designer. ■ Each work is named and numbered according to a custom base-60 number system.
