In 2014 IAES, created the phrase “AE Warrior” to delineate the difference between a patient with ‘encephalitis’ VS a patient with Autoimmune Encephalitis. AE can be on-going for several years while other types of encephalitis are events that occur lasting approximately two weeks. Encephalitis patients have always referred to themselves as ‘Survivors’. They survived the disease and live with the disabilities caused by brain swelling. AE patients are ‘Warriors’ as they continue their battle until their disease is resolved. The International Autoimmune Encephalitis Society, (IAES), is the only Family/Patient-centered organization for people with a diagnosis of Autoimmune Encephalitis. The phrase “AE Warrior” quickly gained popularity in the worldwide AE community as it exemplified thr difficult battle an AE patient was faced with in re-gaining their health. Newly diagnosed patients who entered the AE community would immediately identify themselves as a new AE Warrior. The moniker resonated. International Autoimmune Encephalitis Society became known as the ‘Home of the AE Warrior”. The AE Warrior Store was born out of the desire for the AE patient to express their personal pride in fighting such a traumatic disease and the natural desire to spread awareness.
