Zao Snow Monsters Japan Postcard
The Zao 'Snow Monsters' (Juhyo) are a unique natural phenomenon found on the slopes of Mount Zao. Heavy snowfall and freezing winds encase the local fir trees in ice and snow, transforming them into grotesque, towering white figures that look like monsters.
These formations are a major winter attraction, especially when they are illuminated at night with colourful spotlights. Visitors can see them via ropeway or by skiing through the 'monster' fields, creating an otherworldly and slightly surreal winter experience unlike anywhere else in Japan.
