Yokai Kappa (River Imp) Postcard

This postcard features a Japanese youkai called the kappa. The Japanese writing in the background is the spirit's name "kappa (河童)," which means "river child." Their most distinguishing characteristic is the shallow bowl of water in the top of their heads, which drains them of power if dried or spilled. Kappa love cucumbers, as well as a fictional human body part called the shirikodama, a ball found within the human butt. Kappa are usually depicted as antagonistic toward humans, and are a general boogeyman creature used to keep children from swimming unattended.
