Wotan rides again! postcard

Wotan was a pretty important dude in Valhalla. AKA Odin, AKA Wodan, probable fore runner of Santa Claus, he had places named after him ( eg. Wansdyke in the UK, Wuodenesberg in Germany, Odense in Denmark…) and they even named a day of the week after him (Wednesday). His name probably stems from an Indo-Germanic root meaning “to inspire” and “Anger” -among other things. When he wasn’t performing duties concerning the fruitfulness of the earth or accepting offerings of beer and getting thoroughly pissed he was generally riding around being warlike on his EIGHT legged horse “Sleipnir” – which was probably equivalent to cruising down main street in a M1 Abrams battle tank today.
