The World of Tomorrow: If You Lived Here, You'd be Home Now. Well. You would, wouldn't you? It's pretty much inarguable. There was a time when we excelled at dreaming up the future. Some folks think that was because we were more optimistic; that we hadn't yet been disillusioned; that, maybe, we were more gullible. But the fact is that in those days - and I'm talking about the 1930s, here - we simply needed that optimistic future very badly. The hope for the future was the only thing we had that stood between us and our truly awful present. And although no sane person would want those conditions to return, there's no reason why we can't believe in a better future today. It's just that the idea isn't hip. And we can tell that it'll take a bit of work to bring it about.
