In the War of 1812, the American Navy was miniscule, so we handed out letters of marque and reprisal to anyone with a doughty ship. The "privateer" was born. Many of those ships were "schooners, pilot boat built", swift, agile sharp hulled "wolves of the sea" (who took prizes/enemy ships and goods) or "flyers" (who ran blockades)... they were later known as Baltimore Clippers.
