About This Design

William Turner - Lake Nemi Tile

William Turner - Lake Nemi Tile

Lake Nemi, painted in 1827-1828 in oil on canvas by British Romantic painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (J. M. W. Turner). The composition looks across the volcanic lake and surrounding Italian landscape through a veil of warm atmospheric light. Turner had travelled extensively in Italy, and here exact topography gives way to luminous distance, softened contours and the classical associations that made the Roman Campagna central to his mature landscape painting.
