Beloved by his soldiers, he frequently clashed with superiors and was often brusque, profane, and abrasive. Yet he was one of the few Union generals who could be described as a genius, with several patents to his name. Rosecrans was responsible for leading Union forces to victory in many battles across West Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Missouri, but he is probably most well known for his defeat at Chickamauga.
