The northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is also known as the redbird, common cardinal or cardinal. It can be found throughout the eastern United States in residential areas, woodlands, gardens, shrublands, and wetlands. The northern cardinal is the state bird of seven U.S. states, more than any other species: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. It is also the mascot of numerous athletic teams.
