Wild Sweet Peas, Unalaska Island Postcard

There are two species of sweet peas on Unalaska Island. The dark and light purple blossoms in this photo belong to Lathyrus maritimus L. ssp. pubescens. This sweet pea prefers the coastal areas of Unalaska Island. It can be seen growing along the roadsides in Dutch Harbour, Alaska where the beach comes close to the road. It is a member of the pea family and can be found all through the Aleutian Island chain.
