They called him 'l'incorruptible'. He was the champion of the ordinary men and women of France and the scourge of the aristocracy. Loved and hated in equal measure Maximilien Robespierre met his fate on 10 Thermidor, guillotined face up! The still is from Abel Gance's 1927 epic film Napoléon. Robespierre, played by Edmond Van Daële, wears his distinctive dark glasses.
