The name 'mallet wheel' is taken from 'Heian Monkan'. / In the old days, there were two types of waterwheels: one with a plate-shaped end and one with a ladle-shaped end. The ladle-shaped design was incorporated into the pattern and was called a 'ladle wheel'. The ladle shape of the ladle wheel was cylindrical, but if rounded, it would turn into a mallet in terms of design. In other words, the 'mallet wheel' is a waterwheel that is represented by attaching a mallet to a 'wheel' (one of the crest designs). (From 'Exploring Family Crests' by Keiichi Morimoto)
