Watermelon Berries, Unalaska Island Postcard

Watermelon berry plants (Streptopus amplexifolius L.) are also known as wild cucumber plants. They are a member of the lily family. Watermelon berry plants are found all over Unalaska Island, often prefering the company of ferns in areas where there is water runoff from the hills. The berries start out a light green with darker green stripes, giving them the appearance of tiny watermelons. They turn red as they ripen and have a mild flavour that is unremarkable. The whole plant is edible.
