The Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft were launched in 1977 to study the planets of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune before leaving the solar system. They each had a golden phonograph record with sounds and images of planet Earth under a golden cover with directions for other civilizations to play the record, and a map of our place in the cosmos.
