About This Design
Virginia Woolf soft pencil portrait Jigsaw Puzzle
Virginia Woolf soft pencil portrait ... My own 2004 pencil drawing portrait of Adeline Virginia Woolf (maiden name Stephen; born 25 January 1882 – died by drowning suicide 28 March 1941) an English writer. She was a feminist ahead of her time. She married a Jew and defended him as having more goodness in a tiniest part of him than Christians could hope to have altogether. Her method of writing is called stream of consciousness ... attempting to give the random stream of associated thoughts of her main characters in her novels. She was believed to have been bisexual. I drew from a copy of a 1902 photo of her by George Charles Beresford who came to photograph her father, her sister, and herself. She and her sister had been models artists sought out in the period known to us as Art Nouveau. Her image today is current in women's equality and diversity and gay equality and religious tolerance and sensitivity to feelings and to thoughts of others. Our assignment in illustration class at Illinois Central College was to do a soft pencil portrait from a choice of supplied images.
