Vintage Yokai Otoroshi- Japanese Monster Coaster

This is a scan of a picture scroll drawn by Sawaki Suushi in 1737, in the Edo Period of Japanese history. The scroll collection is called the Hyakkai-Zukan, or The Illustrated Volume of a Hundred Spirits. The yokai, or spirit, depicted here is named Otoroshi. The Otoroshi (おとろし) is an ogre-like monster with lots of hair. There is no historical information about this yokai's behaviours, but in the modern era, he has acquired the trait of lurking atop torii gates at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. He springs down on troublemakers when they pass by.
