Vintage Vinegar Valentine - The Modern Wife, Holiday Card
In the late 1880s to 1940s, Vinegar Valentines were a popular way to send a message to someone you didn't like or someone you wanted to prank. They had rude but funny messages about a type of person that was written as an insult. This card is a dig at "The Modern Wife" of the 1950s who didn't know how to cook. It depicts a woman in front of the stove holding a cook book up to read while she stirs something on the stove top. Empty cans that she has open are strewn all over the floor. The verse on the front of the card says, "Modern Wife - If you couldn't open cans your hubby'd surely die - Because he'd starve...or you would cook and poison him...poor guy!" The inside of the card is blank for your own message.
