Vintage Renaissance Sowbread Botanical Notebook
Look at this polite, downward-nodding flower. Cyclamen purpurascens.
Most people know it only as a fussy garden-centre houseplant that immediately drops all its leaves the moment you overwater it. Absolute rubbish. In the wild, this thing is a rugged woodland survivor. It anchors itself into the rocky, shaded soils of the Alps with a massive, flattened tuber that looks exactly like a dark, hairy turnip. Wild pigs go absolutely mad rooting for them in the dirt. Hence the old English name, Sowbread.
But don't let the wild boars fool you. To a human digestive system, that tuber is spectacularly toxic. It is loaded with saponins.
The ancients respected it immensely. Pliny the Elder called it tuber terrae and insisted that if you planted it around your home, it functioned as a literal botanical amulet against evil spells. He also casually noted that if you dropped the root into a goblet of wine, it would induce immediate, blinding intoxication. In later centuries, apothecaries prescribed it as a drastic cure for madness, melancholia, and demonic possession. It is a piece of heavy medical artillery masquerading as a delicate pink ballerina.
That makes this the only logical notebook for your daily planning.
You don't buy a journal wrapped in a Renaissance illustration of a magical ward just to politely track your daily water intake. You use this to map out a completely unreasonable, highly aggressive garden redesign. To violently scribble down your wildest theories. To document the frankly chaotic behaviour of the local wildlife.
The spiral binding is mandatory for anyone who actually ventures outside. You can fold the cover entirely flat against its own back. Try fighting with a stiffly glued, supposedly elegant spine while you are kneeling in damp leaf mould, trying to pry apart a stubborn rootball. You can't. The paper here is thick enough to handle a heavy streak of fountain pen ink without feathering, ensuring your most unhinged field notes are perfectly preserved.

Although the product is what I expected (it's a notebook), the packaging for delivery was done poorly, and the notebook arrived bent, enough so that I am not comfortable giving it as the gift it was intended to be. The quality of the picture and design is lovely, but again, because it arrived bent, it is rather skewed.

This journal came in within a week of ordering it and I was thrilled! I love roses so I love having this journal. The size is perfect. Small enough to throw in a bag. The printing is clear. The pages are nice and thick. The binding is sturdy. The printing is a little darker than the photo on screen but that is expected with printing. It looks luxurious to me. I love deep red roses.
