Vintage Japanese Art Samurai Warrier in Battle Postcard

This vintage Japanese art postcard features the woodblock print depicting historical samurai hero, Hayashi Tanshirô Taketoshi, armoured but without helmet, in his last battle at Uchide-no-hama in 1582. Several opponents are attacking him in this interesting composition. The artwork is from Kuniyoshi’s series Taiheiki Eiyuden or “Heroes of the Great Peace” (1846-47). The artist of this work, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was an undisputed master of the warrior woodblock print and one of the last great names in the Japanese ukiyo-e style. Born in Tokyo in 1797, he became an apprentice to a famous print master at the age of 12.
