This oil on canvas from 1889, showing a field of wheat enclosed by a wall with the mountains of Arles in the background, was painted during Van Gogh's stay at the Saint-Paul asylum. In a letter to his brother Theo, he wrote "Through the iron-barred window I see a square field of wheat in an enclosure, above which I see the morning sun rising in all its glory. The stone wall, like a picture frame, helped to display the changing colours of the wheat field."
