Vincent van Gogh - Cypresses 2 Inch Square Button

Cypresses, painted in 1889 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Van Gogh became fascinated by the dark cypresses around Saint-Rémy, comparing their lines and proportions to an Egyptian obelisk and calling them a difficult dark note in a sunlit landscape. This close vertical view pushes the trees toward the viewer, with dense green forms twisting against a lively sky. Painted soon after he began exploring the countryside beyond the hospital grounds, the canvas was later shown at the 1890 Salon des Indépendants.
