We were walking in the Old Town in Vilnius, Lithuania and had lost our bearings. Before I could check a map, I noticed a small “Welcome” sign on the plain wood door of a large building. There was no window to see in, so my curiosity won out. I slowly turned the doorknob and this is what we saw. Can you imagine? I felt like I had momentarily travelled back in time. Cordial staff members greeted us. I shared that I was a former librarian and that my grandmother was Lithuanian. They immediately offered a personalized tour of the facility, beginning with this exquisite Reading Room of the Rare Manuscript Department of the Vilnius University Library. The special collections house books and other wonderful artifacts.
