Below the old castle and village are caves once inhabited by Byzantine monks. The strong point on St Theodore's hill was also used by the Angevin's and Bourbons and it was an important fortification right up until the unification of Italy. Laino Castello and Laino Borgo are in the beautiful and historic Pollino National Park amid the stunning hills, mountains, rivers and valleys of Calabria.
