The Bishkek World War II Memorial at Victory Square was built during the golden age of communism. Before Kyrgyzstan's independence, Bishkek was called Frunze, capital of the Kyrgyz SSR. As a former Soviet Republic, Kyrgyzstan shares modernist architectural themes with cities across the Soviet empire. The Bishkek World War II Monument at Victory Square was built to last. Tourists visiting Bishkek are drawn to Victory Square, often posing for photos outside the monument.
