This is an idea that is gaining new life. When I was a child, my mother used to take me with her when she went to inspect and grade victory gardens grown by children at the school where she taught. Even though it was well after the war, victory gardens were still kept, at least by folks in Cleveland. In this economy, each man, woman and child should grow as much as they can in community gardens, public land, yards, porches, balconies, window boxes or rooftops. It's one of the best ways to reconnect with nature and to feel like you have some dominion over your own destiny. This poster is from WWI.
