Stairway to the Victor Emmanuel II monument, bathed in the Roman sun on a Roman afternoon. The monument was erected in honour of the first king of a unified Italy. It is also known as Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) and houses the tomb of an unknown soldier, after World War I. This stunning marble monument is adorned with quadrigae and winged victories, atop Corinthian columns. It dwarfs visitors and creates a feeling of awe from its sheer majesty.
