Mount Vesuvius in Italy as an active volcano in 1850 in the background of this reproduction in black and white, showing Naples and the bay of Naples in the centre. A shepherd with two goats stands in the foreground on a hill with trees and shrubs beside a seated lady wearing a hat. The view from a hill shows Naples and its buildings as a small sea town. 1850 was one of several years when the volcano was active in the 19th Century. The wood engraving dates from 1855.
