The Venus Flytrap catches and digests its prey in the trapping structure, which is formed by the terminal portion of each of the plants leaves, and is triggered by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces. Native to coastal North Carolina and northern South Carolina, it grows in open bogs. It is also a popular cultivated plant.
