Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe, painted in 1889 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Arles. Van Gogh shows himself in winter clothing with his bandaged ear and a pipe, using a tightly framed format and strong contrasts of colour. Painted in January, the portrait belongs to the small group he made after returning to work in Arles following hospitalization. Rather than presenting a formal image of the artist, it records a specific moment of recovery through direct brushwork and an unembellished, closely observed face.

I'm a huge Van Gogh fan and I love having this painted tile on top of my file cabinet where I can see it every day. Van Gogh struggled terribly with untreated Bipolar I but he was a fighter and kept painting til the end when he couldn't bear it anymore.
