USS Monitor Amphitrite Poster

Named for the ancient Greek goddess of tin cans, the Amphitrite was probably obsolete the moment her iron hull touched brine. Boasting 8 inch guns, the Amphitrite appears ready to take on the world's remaining wooden navies. This monitor is what could be called charitably a "wet ship." USS Amphitrite is heading north on the Hudson River near where Riverside Church now stands. The occasion is either the naval parade for the end of the Spanish American War; or, the dedication of Grant's Tomb. The people on the shore will go to their beds tonight a little more nervous knowing that America's defense depends on such a vessel.
