UNESCO - WHS - Mérida - The Mithraeum House Postcard

UNESCO - WHS - Mérida - The Mithraeum House Postcard

UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Spain Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida / Conjunto arqueológico de Mérida - The colony of Augusta Emerita, which became present-day Mérida, was founded in 25 BC at the end of the Spanish Campaign and was the capital of Lusitania. The well-preserved remains of the old city include, in particular, a large bridge over the Guadiana, an amphitheatre, a theatre, a vast circus and an exceptional water-supply system. It is an excellent example of a provincial Roman capital during the empire and in the years afterwards. The Mithraeum House is an impressive Roman house just outside the city walls of Mérida, built at the end of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd century. Its size and the decoration of some rooms undoubtedly show that its owners were people of Hellenistic culture who were important within the society. At the Columbaria Funerary Area there are two open cremation tombs belonging to two important families, the Voconios and the Julios. There are still a few funerary urns that remain and a family portrait of the Voconios. These funerary buildings date back to the 1st century. Name: Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida Site: Mithraeum House, Columbaria Funerary Area / Casa Mitreo - Columbarios Country: Spain Location: Province of Badajoz, Extremadura Inscription: 1993 Category: Cultural (iii)(iv) Unesco Ref: 664-011 Special Feature: The card has a QR-Code on the backside to navigate for more Informations about the site.
