UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Spain Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain / Cueva de Altamira y arte rupestre paleolítico del norte de España These caves represents the apogee of Paleolithic cave art that developed across Europe, from the Urals to the Iberian Peninusula, from 35000 to 11000 BC. Because of their deep galleries, isolated from external climatic influences, these caves are particularly well preserved. The caves are inscribed as masterpieces of creative genius and as the humanity’s earliest accomplished art. They are also inscribed as exceptional testimonies to a cultural tradition and as outstanding illustrations of a significant stage in human history. The El Pindal cave is a prehistoric cave has a linear plan in which two sectors can be distinguished. The eastern sector is open to the public and the western one is with restricted access. The existence of 13 bison, 8 horses, a doe, a deer and some isolated antlers, a mammoth and other unrecognizable figures have been documented.
