UNESCO WHS - Dacian Fortresses - Sarmizegetusa Postcard

UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Romania Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains - Fortărețe dacice din Munții Orăștiei - Sarmizegetusa Built in murus dacicus style, the 6 Dacian Fortresses were created in the 1st centuries BC and AD as protection against the Roman conquest. They played an important role uring the Roman-Dacian wars. These fortresses show an unusual fusion of military and religious architectural techniques and concepts from the classical world and the late European Iron Age. Sarmisegetusa was the capital and the most important military, religious and political centre of the Dacians before the wars with the Roman Empire. Erected on top of a 1200 m high mountain, the fortress, comprising 6 citadels, was the core of a strategic defensive system in the Orăștie Mountains. Name: Dacian Fortresses of the Orastie Mountains Site: Sarmizegetusa Country: Romania Location: Hunedoara County Inscription: 1999 Category: Cultural (ii)(iii)(iv) Unesco Ref: 906-001 Special Feature: The card has a QR-Code on the backside to navigate for more Informationas about the site.
