UNESCO WHS - Arco de Trajano de Mérida Postcard

UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Spain Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida / Conjunto arqueológico de Mérida - The colony of Augusta Emerita, which became present-day Mérida, was founded in 25 BC at the end of the Spanish Campaign and was the capital of Lusitania. The well-preserved remains of the old city include, in particular, a large bridge over the Guadiana, an amphitheatre, a theatre, a vast circus and an exceptional water-supply system. It is an excellent example of a provincial Roman capital during the empire and in the years afterwards. The Arch of Trajan, situated at the end of the cardo maximus (the main road of Emerita Augusta) is believed to have marked the entrance to the Provincial Forum. It‘s built of granite and it is 13.97 m high. It was originally covered with marble. The remains of an imperial temple built under the reign of Tiberius was found in the current Holguín street, although due to its size, remains could be found in adjacent streets. It received a massive marble decoration during the reign of the emperor Claudius. Name: Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida Site: Trajan's Arch, Concordia Temple / Arco de Trajano y Templo de la Concordia Country: Spain Location: Province of Badajoz, Extremadura Inscription: 1993 Category: Cultural (iii)(iv) Unesco Ref: 664-006 Special Feature: The card has a QR-Code on the backside to navigate for more Informations about the site.
