UNESCO WHS Serie - Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) - 古都京都の文化財（京都市、宇治市、大津市） - Nishi Hongan-ji (Onissan) - 西本願寺 (お西さん) - Built in A.D. 794 on the model of the capitals of ancient China, Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan from its foundation until the middle of the 19th century. As the centre of Japanese culture for more than 1‘000 years, Kyoto illustrates the development of Japanese wooden architecture, particularly religious architecture, and the art of Japanese gardens. The site contains 17 Historic locations. Nishi Hongan-ji (Western Temple of the Original Vow), known affectionately in Kyoto as Onissan (Dear Mr. West), is one of 2 temple complexes of Jōdo Shinshū in Kyoto. Jōdo Shinshū is a school of Pure Land Buddhism, and today Nishi Hongan-ji serves as the head temple. Nishi Hongan-ji was established in 1602 by the shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu.
