It features wetlands of outstanding importance for migratory water birds, including globally threatened species, among them the extremely rare Siberian white crane, the Dalmatian pelican,the Pallas’s fish eagle and the critically endangered Saiga antelope. Naurzum State Nature Reserve is located in the central part of the Turgay Plateau within the steppe zone of Kazakhstan. It protects about 3'081 km2 (1'190 sq mi) of steppes, semi desert and forests.
