UNESCO WHS Serie - Rideau Canal - Cathcart Tower, Cedar Island - The Rideau Canal, a monumental early 19th-century construction covering 202 km of the Rideau and Cataraqui rivers from Ottawa south to Kingston Harbour on Lake Ontario, was built primarily for strategic military purposes at a time when Great Britain and the United States vied for control of the region. Cathcart Tower is a Martello tower located on Cedar Island in the St. Lawrence River, off the eastern shore of Fort Henry. It is one of four such towers built in the 1840s to protect Kingston's harbour and the entrance to the Rideau Canal.
