UNESCO WHS Serie - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - `Ola`a Forest - The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park contains two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa 13'679 ft (4'169 m) high and Kīlauea 4'091 ft (1'250 m) high, both of which tower over the Pacific Ocean. Volcanic eruptions have created a constantly changing landscape, and the lava flows reveal surprising geological formations. Rare birds and endemic species can be found there, as well as forests of giant ferns. The `Ola`a Forest is separated from the main area of the park. It is a 9'000 acre (36.4 km2) parcel of relatively undisturbed rain forest. It's a forest dominated by `ohi`a canopy and a tree-fern understorey.
