＊Title : 高島屋　市川米升（Takashimaya Ichiikawa Beishō / たかしまや　いちかわ　べいしょう） Author : 一英斎芳艶（Ichieisai Yoshitsuya / いちえいさい　よしつや） 町火消（machi bikeshi / まち　びけし / FIre fighters in Yedo ） Yedo (present-day Tokyo) had many fires, so firefighters were organized by the townspeople. Most of them were made up of steeplejack workers. These daredevil and stylish firefighters were very popular among the townspeople. The basic method of firefighting at that time was destructive firefighting to prevent the spread of fire. In this picture, a kabuki actor is playing the role of a firefighter.
