Ueda (上田市 , Ueda-shi ? ) is a city in Nagano Prefecture , Japan .
The city was formed on March 6, 2006, when the city of Ueda , the towns of Maruko , Sanada and the village of Takeshi (all from Chiisagata District ) merged to form the city of Ueda . The new city replaced the former city of Ueda for the first time in 87 years since Ueda became a city in 1919.
As of June 1, 2011, the city has a population of 158,187 and 61,091 households with a population density of 286.57 people/km². The area of the city is 552.00 km², which makes it the fifth largest in Nagano Prefecture.
Anraku-ji in Bessho Onsen, Ueda has the only extant octagonal pagoda in Japan. The pagoda has been designated as National Treasure .
