Tundra Moss, Unalaska Island Postcard

There are many species of moss which grow in the Aleutian Islands. The mosses play a vital role in the ecology of the Aleutians. Moss collects and retains water and provides a place for root systems of other plants to grow and absorb the water. Mosses provide ground cover to protect the root systems and the compost from moss creates an acidic top soil which would otherwise be absent. The moss shown in this photo, which was taken on Unalaska Island, has beautiful colouring-- pastel greens combined with the dusty rose of the stems creates a tiny microcosm of artistic splendour.
