Train Station - The central station 1909 Poster

Colorized photo from 1909 Original title: Central Station Location: 42 Depot Street Saranac Lake, Adirondacks, NY This is Union station, built in 1904, it controlled the Chateaugay Railroad from the east, and the New York Central Railroad from the west. This was not the original location, it used to be at 19 Depot street, but was moved and attached to a freight house. Union Station was the largest station on the line north of Utica, handling from 18 to 20 trains per day. They used it as a train station till April 24, 1965, then it was closed. It remained empty for around 30 years. Then in 1997-98 it was finally restored, and still stands there today. The train is a Mother Hubbard or Camelback style (the cab is in the centre). They were designed like that because the firebox was very wide, and it wouldn't allow for much room for the driver, he really couldn't see that well either. However this shouldn't be confused with a Camel train, where the cab rides on top of the boiler, this is a camel back, where the cab is on the side of the boiler. This design was eventually banned because the driver could easily get hit with flying metal because he was right over the wheels.
