Long ago children used to play with marbles. As far as I know, as told in legend, kids would try to knock out a friends marble from a circle drawn on the sidewalk (sounds crazy right)? The person who knocked it out, kept the marble as a prize, leaving the other child without his marbles (that's probably where the expression comes from).
