Tower of Hercules Spain Postcard

The Tower of Hercules is an ancient Roman lighthouse located on a peninsula about 2.4 kilometres from the centre of A Coruña, Galicia, in northwestern Spain. Standing at 55 metres tall, it overlooks the North Atlantic coast of Spain and is famous for being the oldest known lighthouse still in use today. Built in the late 1st century AD, the structure has served as a sentinel for maritime navigation for nearly two millennia, earning it status as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The monument is wrapped in rich myth and history, with legends attributing its construction to the mythical hero Hercules after his victory over the giant Geryon. Although the exterior was extensively remodeled with a neoclassical facade in the late 18th century, the core of the ancient Roman engineering remains remarkably intact. Surrounded by a vast public sculpture park, the rugged coastal landscape offers dramatic views of the crashing Atlantic waves, making it an enduring symbol of maritime heritage and regional pride.
