This is a skull and bones (crossbones) design that was inspired by the Hussars of Imperial Germany and other military units throughout history. The symbol of the totenkopf is often associated with pirates as well. Although totenkopf is usually translated as "death's head" in the English language, it's literal German translation is "head of a dead man" in the context of this particular design.
