The ancient fort protecting the Calabrian seaside town of Scalea is known as the Torre Talao. It was once an island and has been populated since Paleolithic times. The fort was built in the sixteenth century by Charles V to protect against Turkish pirates. Aeneas and Ulysses are supposed to have passed by here.
