"Torre de Belem, Lisboa" postcard
Belém Tower, or Torre de Belém, near Lisbon, was built as part of a defence system at the entrance of the Tagus river in the early 16th century in the extravagant Portuguese late Gothic, or Manueline style. This unique construction is a reminder of the Portuguese power during the Age of the Discoveries, and in 1983, together with the nearby Hieronymites Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), it was nominated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
