Tokyo Streetlights: Ueno Postcard
Lantern-like streetlights along a Ueno backstreet are decorated with ginkgo leaves. Ancient, hardy and beautiful, the ginkgo tree (Gingko biloba) came to Japan from China around 1,000 years ago and now can be often seen growing in Shinto shrines, in parks and along streets in Tokyo. A stylized version of the gingko's fan-shaped leaf (which is also meant to resemble a "T") has been the official emblem of Tokyo since 1989.
