Tibet Mount Kailash Travel Postcard

Mount Kailash, rising to 6,638 metres (21,778 feet) in the remote western part of the Tibet Autonomous Region, is one of the most sacred mountains in the world. It holds profound religious significance for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers. In Hinduism, it is considered the abode of Lord Shiva, the god of destruction and transformation, while in Buddhism, it is associated with the Buddhist deities Demchok and Chakrasamvara. The mountain’s sharply defined, symmetrical peak, often capped with snow, has never been summited due to religious reverence, making it a symbol of spiritual purity and the ultimate pilgrimage destination. Pilgrims undertake the kora, a 52-kilometre (32-mile) circumambulation around Mount Kailash, often on foot, as a form of spiritual cleansing and merit-making. The journey is extremely challenging due to high altitudes, freezing temperatures, and rugged terrain, but completing the kora is believed to bring spiritual benefits and enlightenment. Nearby is Lake Manasarovar, considered one of the holiest lakes in Asia, where pilgrims perform ritual baths.
